Nutritional Therapy A holistic approach to nutrition looks at what a person eats and drinks, but also the way in which one eats or drinks. Attitude towards food and drink is very important, as well as the environment for receiving this nutrition. Yes, eating organic foods is important, and fresh foods are often preferable, but if these pure foods are eaten in a hurry or over a business related or stressful conversation, your body has almost no chance of assimilating what you are taking in. Thus, I work with clients to expand their awareness concerning how, as well as, what they are eating. Chinese medicine also offers unique perspectives on diet, that coincide with some pretty common sense notions. First, it is important to eat with the seasons. This insures that one doesn't create health probs or make worse existing conditions by eating or drinking things that don't agree with the bodies natural constitution. Second, the time of day we eat, as well as the temperature of the food and water we take in is important. Finally, there are foods that are considered medicinal that can be taken to improve existing health conditions. Many medicinal foods can be used when cooking to make a meal more nourishing. A couple examples of nutritional advice from the Chinese Med perspective follow. Someone with angina should not drink cold water, as the cold causes constriction of blood vessels and can add to the symptoms of pain in the chest. A patient diagnosed with cancer should cut down on excess sugar intake, as excess carbohydrates can lead to congestion and the formation of heat and tumors/masses. (Do not follow these recommendations without getting a consultation from a qualified practitioner.) There are specific reasons for these recommendations that come from the Chinese medical perspective and I invite specific questions or concerns that you may have. A comprehensive nutritional exam along with herbal and food recommendations for you and your loved ones is available. Contact me directly for an appointment using links to the left. |
