Frequently asked questions:
Will I be helped by holistic medicine?
Because the mind and body are considered as two sides to the same coin in holistic medicine and are thus linked. It is very important that if a client wants it to work for them, they must have an openness and receptivity that these therapies can work for them. Those who are very skeptical get the weakest results. Those who have reason to be optimistic and look for the subtle improvements that are perceptible following treatments get the best results. It is very important with holistic treatments to not only fixate on the main symptoms, but to be open to all of the facets of health that are being worked upon....mind, body and spirit.
How often should I get treatments?
In order to create changes in the energy patterns of your body and effect the physical body thoroughly, most cases require regular, weekly treatments for a period of one to four months. This entirely depends though on how much progress you want to make, what we are treating, and how much you follow the recommendations I make during treatments. If a problem has been present for years, it will take months to erase completely. If it is a newer issue, it may be resolved in one or two visits. You will experience changes in your condition following a treatment, and what I look for is how long these changes last. As treatment progresses I expect to see these positive changes lasting longer and longer, so that eventually the client can go weeks without symptoms of the initial problem. For all people though, myself included, I feel that monthly health maintenance treatments are extremely beneficial and are the best way to practice preventative healthcare.
How soon should I notice a positive difference in my health?
As soon as you lie down on the treatment table. Honestly, I know from experience that you get what you expect, so expect immediate results. Holistic treatments, such as the ones offered here, are profoundly relaxing, so this is the first immediate difference you will experience. Second, if you are being treated for pain or tension, you will feel less pain or tension following your first treatment (pain related to nerve impingement, disc problems, and neuropathies take longer to treat, but still begin to get better following a few treatments). For less tangible issues like fatigue or headaches, you will notice changes during your first month of treatment. It may take a treatment or two, but with a few weeks of regularity you are very likely to begin noticing a change in your symptoms. It is my practice to advise clients that if after a month you are not getting any benefits than try another form of therapy. This very rarely is the case.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are hundreds of times finer than a hypodermic needle, thus the sensation when an acupuncture needle is inserted is not at all as intense as with a hypodermic needle. With good technique you feel nothing more than a tiny prick as it is inserted. There is a sensation though, when the qi or energy arrives at the needle. This sensation is experienced as a deep pressure, a heaviness, or a moving energy, but it is rarely severe or painful. Occasionally you do get a sensation equivalent to an electric shock, but this is rare and it lasts for only a millisecond. I will do everything technique wise to help a client relax if I feel they are nervous about acupuncture. Often doing some massage prior to acupuncture is enough to help a client relax for acupuncture.
